进一步分析显示，被吞掉的邻居会在衰老癌细胞的内部被送去特殊的消化装置——溶酶体。在那里，被吞噬的细胞分解，相当于提供了一场代谢物大餐。
研究者认为，癌细胞借助同类相食获取赖以生存的能量和物质，待到化疗结束还能引发肿瘤复发。基于这些发现，抑制这一过程，也许可以提供新的治疗机会。
